How to Open Up Ports

Warning: Opening up ports is quite a security risk. You should always use a strong password when exposing the service to any internet.

So you know how to use uTorrent, so did you see the little green thing in the bottom like this?

That usually means that some ports are closed and should be open for maximum traffic or that you are behind a router. There's several steps to take.

1. If you haven't done so, go to your software firewall (ie Window's, Norton's, Avast!, McAfee etc) settings and open up port 12429 (or for that matter, whatever you like but be sure to use the same number throughout the tutorial and be sure that when you click on the thingy, the number there matches this number).

2. Open up Command Prompt (Run -> 'cmd') and type in "ipconfig" (without quotes of course). Look at the line that says "IP Address" and remember the number.

3. Go to your web browser and enter http://192.168.0.1 or http://routerlogin.net depending on your router (try them both out, both of them works on my Netgear). Now you have to type in your password. If you don't know your router password, consult www.routerpasswords.com.

4. Some where on the page, you be able to find a thing called "Port Forwarding." If you don't, you have a ghetto router and should get a new one. Find something similar to the phrase "Add Service" and you should see something of a resemblence to this screen (depending of your router) (Source: Lifehacker.com):

Now enter the name (in this case Bittorrent), port (12429) and the IP address which you recorded before. Click enter and the little thing should turn green!
