Speedos: Ask the Readers.

What happened to Speedos? That's my question of the day.

Back in the days when I was in Singapore, all my swim wear were Speedos or its imitators. Now, all the swim wear are all up to my knees. When the ladies wear something as revealing as Speedos (bikinis), people call them "sexy," but when men wear Speedos (especially older/bigger), they're called "the Fat/hairy/old guy who struts his stuff."

So why did it change?

There are lots of great qualities about the Speedo: it causes less drag in water, it makes a much more even tan, and it dries amazingly quick. After its invention, it quickly gained prominence and popularity in the world. Only recently did it fall out of place among popular American popular culture.

What happened? Could it be connected with the lengthening of shorts in the NBA? Could it be linked with the arrival of AIDS?

I want YOUR opinion. And yes, this is related to the MAO banquet.

  1. I do think Michael Jordan made a big contribution to the man-burqa scene. He made men asexual. God forbid that anyone see a man's naked knees.

Heck, if you really want to wear that Speedo in the water, go buy a $550 LZR. Those Olympic athletes are setting records. However, who is going to watch them swim in techno-dopic swimsuits? If those athletes want corporate sponsorship, then they need people watching their swim events. Swimming ain't beautiful or artistic anymore. It's all scientific. It's not interesting to watch men and women swim in burqas.

  2. Personally, I think it's because of American Society, peer pressure and psychology. When a guy wears a speedo, he may feel self-conscious. Other people may also feel self conscious about the guy wearing the speedo (due to American culture's habit for immaturity), so in an attempt to hide their discomfort, they mock the guy wearing the speedo. Poor guy, hears all the giggling and is thus even more self conscious than ever. Pretty soon, he switches to what "everyone else is wearing" and thus the trend continues with similar cases.

  3. well, when an old/fat lady wears a bikini, she too is called "the fat/old/nasty lady who needs to cover up more"
what happened was guys (and girls) didn't want his package out there for everyone to see.
it could be because guys are self-conscious, but not because everyone was making fun of them. (it goes the same with girls, if they feel self-conscious, they'll cover up, but if they don't they'll wear something more revealing)
and i don't think it's America's "immaturity" from teasing but rather America being more mature covering it up.
it's less appealing to everyone to see that, than it is with a girl.

  4. Thanks for the reply, runiteking1.

To me, wearing a speedo is not about being seen or seeing others in one; it's is about feeling functional in the water. I have been to places in the world where the majority of men and boys wear speedos. They don't care; neither do the women.

If one is at the pool or beach, a speedo is fine by me. If women only want to see men who are 10's in a speedo, then they need to expect to see the 9's, 8's. 7's, and so on in speedos also. The 10's are not going to wear a speedo if other men do not wear one.
