Volunteer

For this week, I'm volunteering at a museum's summer camp program, thus my lack of posts today. The problem is, the kids there are... weird.

Some background first. The camp is called "Galactic Blastoff" (I think) and it's composed of only 4th and 5th graders. That's where the problem lies, it's composed of 4th and 5th graders. Most of the little kids can't behave quite well and to illustrate that, here's some examples:

The teacher or counselor was showing pictures of him skydiving and one of the kids yelled out "You looked really fat..."

The table which I was suppose to be helping (which is the Devil's table) contained a kid who wrote the B-word on the table repeatedly.

One little person keeps on mistaking me for being Japanese instead of Chinese and never even asked me. He constantly yelled out, "Hey Japanese boy!"

So rude...

If only these kids can be mature and understand how lucky they are to be able to eat a full lunch, 2 snacks and have clean water to drink.

Grr....

p.s. Anybody want to give me suggestions for controlling the little kids?

  1. well, i would not try to lecture them that there are less fortunate kids in the world.
just, be nice to them the first time, and if they keep getting out of line, get stricter or bring them over to the side to talk to them. kids usually aren't as tough when they're not in front of their friends.

  3. I think you should try getting to be their friend. Then they could possibly respect you more and treat you in a nicer manner.

  4. I think Ann pretty much has it covered, but if they really start getting out of hand, you should get really strict. They think they can get away with these things because they don't think you'll do anything. If you show them that there will be negative consequences etc, and just act really menacing, they might start behaving.

  5. lawl. You tagged Linda on the fb thread to this post? My advice is think of how you would control Linda and use the same tactics to control 4th/5th graders ;-D.

  6. Just say that you are part of the Chinese Communist Army and would have no second thoughts on killing them right there on the spot. If that doesn't work, then say you will use your Asian mind powers to torture them mentally, or just make them do math.
