As the Drummers Burn...

Burn calories that is...

A new study from Chichester University found out that drummers has the physical capabilities of a top athlete.

So a doctor, Dr Marcus Smith, did a study on Clem Burke, the veteran Blondie drummer, revealed that 90 minutes of drumming could raise his heart rate to 190 beats a minute. As you can see from the chart below (source: Wikimedia), no matter what age you are, 190 bpm is VERY intense.

So in an average span of a typical 60 minutes concert, a drummer could burn up to 400 to 600 calories, probably able to be classified as a sport. Now here's the grueling part:

He said: "Footballers can normally expect to play 40 to 50 games a year - but in one 12 month period, Clem played 90-minute sets at 100 concerts.

"Footballer find playing a Champions League game once every two weeks a drain, but these guys are doing it every day when they are on tour.
Now imagine that... "drumming" as a sport in the next Olympics (of course, for every great athlete, there's usually the ones who use steroids...).

  1. That's a little choppy as a conclusion, seeing as how you'd *probably* feel more drained after working hard AND having high physical contact. I don't think the drummer deals with that.
