As of right now, I'm a level 2225 pro on Wii tennis. Since the highest computer player is only 2000, and her partner is 1900, that means that if I even lose three points in a match my level will go down. I'm pretty sure this give me some credibilty to writing this...
Controlling the Ball:
This is definiltly the most important part of the game. Unlike real tennis, you can't just change the angle of contact or shift positions to adjust the flight path. The Wii judges how early, or late you swing at the ball. Assuming you're a right hander, if you strike a forehand (on your right side) early, it'll go to your left; if struck late, then to your right. Same thing on the backhand: early to your right, late to your left. Master this and you'll be a high level pro in no time.
Spin:
Spin isn't all critical to Wii tennis but against human opponents, it's fun to through in the occasional side spin. From my experince, in order to put side spin on a ball, you must swing through the ball much slower than normal for good spin. Basically just go at the slowest pace you can without the Wii not registering.
Tactics:
Levels: 0 - 1000: Utilize your net man, just CONSTANTLY hit with him, not to early not to late to keep it from going out. You should be pretty comfortable changing directions with it by your 10th/11th match. (I suggest you use some training too).
Levels: 1001 - 1500: This is where they start serving big. You can serve big too by timing your serve correctly to hit the ball at the higest part of the toss (no need to swing hard). To return their serves, you should be prepared to just swing the Wii mote fast once you see the ball hitten fast. Take your Wii mote back before they serve to insure more time.
You could still bash the ball with your net person and get away with it, but its more economical to let your back person to start hitting more. Try to hit crosscourt with him to draw the oppoenents wide, then intercept the return with the net person. This will be your fundamental tatic for everything.
Levels: 1500 - 2000: After you mastered hinting into the opposite corners, you'll probably encouter Elise (2000 level computer). To beat her, you can try to do two things: wear her out by hitting long rallies till she sweats and is prone to errors, or be EXTREMELY careful in your corner hitting, they hit fast balls now and timing will be hard. The rest will be intution from your experince.
