The Little Prince

I just saw the xkcd for the astroid and the Little Prince, I found it appaling. I remembered that back in the day, my mom and I used to read a translated version of the Little Prince in Chinese. The impression it had on me isn't profound as I don't think we finished the book, yet there is something mystique about the illustrations and the loneliness of the person.

The curiosity was there when Randall published the comic, and the comic spurred the curiosity even more. Wikipedia was my first (and only...) stop. After looking around, the urge to click on other links on the page kicked in. As a result I landed here.

Some stuff I noticed:
  • The Little Red Book by some estimate has more copies printed and shippied than the Bible, even though there's some 1500 years difference in age.

  • Out of the top 6 top books, 4 of them are in Chinese including the Xinhua dictionary (which I have a copy of)

  • The first actual novel, "Tale of Two Cities", to rank is an extremely hard read (at least to me, still a good novel though, I may had to sparknotes the majority of it...).

  • "Mien Kampf" which sold 10 million copies (I'm assume not many people would buy it now), that means that 16% of the popluation had the book back in 1922. No wonder Hitler got into power.
I love Wikipedia.

A Reputation: Part Two...

Just for fun, I've created a page on the wiki (which is here) that allows a user to edit and add to a person's reputation at our school. If you don't know what I'm saying, this video should take care of a whole bunch of questions (link). The video is too big for this blog.

So lets recap the rules:
1. No full names...
2. No damaging stuff (you know what I mean)
3. Try to make it funny and not insulting...
4. Try to only focus on this year.
5. NEVER edit your own name.

Feel free to add your own name for other people to add to.

Another Wiki

I've created another wiki, this time for AP World's study guide.

The link is here http://runiteking1.wikidot.com/start.

Please look at this post on what a wiki is for.

The Purpose of a Wiki

A is "wiki" is defined on Wikipedia as

A collection of web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses it to contribute or modify content, using a simplified markup language[1][2]. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites and to power community websites.
The keyword here is collaborative. The whole point of a wiki is that one person cannot do it, but we can do it as a group.

So for example, I wonder on to Wikipedia and browse around. Suddenly I saw a horrible, horrible mistake. It stated that the Boehm system fingering on the clarinet contains only 14 keys when it actually contains 17 keys.

Well so what do I do?

First of all, one should look under the discussion tab on the top left corner to see if there is some debate on the topic. If there is, you should add your own input into the discussion and keep up with it.

If there is no discussion, just click the edit tab, locate a good passage to put in the additional information, and add it in. As a rule of thumb, such verifiable fact should be cited (as you can see from the example above).

When you are finished adding the information, don't forget to write in what information you submitted under "revision history" or some variant of the phrase. The purpose of that is so other people can confirm that you are right.

It's very easy and the end result is better information for all.
