Babies are Funny

There's no more day care for this week, so my little brother stayed home today along with my mom. Two of his friends also came over so that their parents could work.

In the afternoon, as we were all in a car, the three kids begun a joke fest. I distinctly remembered one:

[Eric]: What's the difference between a chicken and a man?

[Daniel]: They both have babies...?
The actual joke doesn't involve babies (I don't remember the original... but I found this alteration more funny).

Anyways, I asked Brighten to sit down and show some of his stand up comedy joke.

FYI: If you don't get the "no soap, radio" thing? Look at this Wiki article.

The Agonizing Dinners

My little brother sucks at eating.

I mean, he just loves to eat those special little treats looks JUST so delicious but doesn't like the normal food. I think the normal dinner that we have is perfectly fine, perfectly yummy... yet he takes more than 50 minutes to eat a meal that barely weights 8 ounces.

One thing that sorts of bugs me is his reluctance to eat new stuff. He constantly just "hates" new, exotic food without even trying it. I mean, most of these food are pretty expensive compared to just plain rice and what about those poorer children? Maybe this is a bit too philosophical...

We have tried somethings to make him eat better. He seems to enjoy a new Pokemon/Yugioh rip-off called Bakugan. I think it's pretty lame, some thing like Medabots except marketable to kids by using trading cards. The smart thing they did is that they use a Transformer like action figure that rolls up into a ball, meaning more money for those Japanese corporate vampires that suck hard working moms dry... take a look:

Now today I tried something a little different. I flaunted right in front of him the idea of me playing the Wii without him, by myself. That seemed to trigger something within him and he bursted out crying within seconds.

Maybe eating food is just not his strong point.

The Wedding Picture

Had a while since I posted about my little brother...

My mom told me this story about him, a conversation went on something like this:

Brighten: Who's in that wedding picture?
Mom: Why don't you tell me.
Brigten: It's you and my brother!
Mom: No! That was me and your dad!
Brighten: Really? It was that long ago...
Mom: Yes.
Brighten: So where was my brother and me?
Mom: Not born yet.
Brighten: You mean we were in your stomach and didn't come out yet?
Mom: No, not yet.
Brighten: Oh, then God still didn't make us yet.

Tae-Kwon-DO

Heh.. my little brother is learning some self-defense from his preschool. Here's some footage:

And guess what I saw on FB ads today? My favorite cartoon hero has a fan club just for me! (and for my little brother when he wants to be the next Jackie Chan...).

Don't Talk!

It's been a long time since the last post about my little brother... so here's some nice, yummy stuff.

During dinner, we always seems to have a little fight over table manners. No matter what happens, sometime in the middle of the course, he shouts out "Food in your mouth, don't talk!" Of course, I do have food in my mouth, and I was talking... but he had food in his mouth too!

What was I suppose to do? If I say "food in YOUR mouth too....," then I'll be talking with food in my mouth, and if I don't reply, he'll give me that gotcha-look. It's pretty annoying.

Of course, being the bright kid that I am, I think I might be able to get him off me. You see, now-a-days, I chew with very little food in my mouth, thus I'm able to quickly swallow the food and respond "No! You have food in your mouth too!" This method of flanking the attacker has worked flawlessly except once.

While at the dinner table today, he did the stereotypical food-in-your-mouth thing, and I replied with the method outlined above. He just plainly replied "Don't talk." What was I suppose to say to that? "No! You don't talk...?" or should I comply? All these choices go through my head, until I enough time had passed that his attention span has passed to another topic...

The Dinner

So at dinner today, several funny things happened with my little brother.

While I was just about to start eating my rice dinner with Chinese vegetables, my little brother wanted to open the new can of rice seasoning (rice to a little kid is boring). Taking the small, glass bottle, he first opened up the plastic cap. But then there is a plastic seal holding back the stuff. He tried to use his hand and just pull the darn thing apart but to no avail. Then he thought about poking holes into the seal but stopped halfway in the middle.

His somewhat OCD-ness kicked in. Why? Because after poking one or two holes, he found out that the holes are messy and not it'll be hard to get off the whole thing. So he settled for using his teeth to pull back the seal. Success, without a mess.

The rest of the family was just watching as this was going on.

After a few minutes of eating, by little brother filed a complaint against the new placemat we got for our new hardwood table in our new house. The placemat is of vinyl material and is white with pink orchids on top. So while eating, Brighten suddenly said. "I don't like this placemat, there's dead flowers on it..." Awkard silence insued.

I think this next event happened before the placemat thing, but nevertheless. I washed my little brother's hand before dinner and sat him on the chair. A little bit latter, he complained that his pants are wet.

Brighten: "My pants are wet!"
Mom: "Are you sure?"
Brighten: "Yes!"
Mom: "Did you poo in your pants?"
Brighten: "No."
Mom: "Then why is it wet?"
Brighten: "I don't know."
Mom "Are you sure it is wet?"
Brighten "FEEL IT!" (said with a passion while sticking his butt out).
Turned out, it was wet from me putting him on some wet cloth while washing his hands.

The Swimmer

So now, my little brother has the ability to swim due to classes at Premier. I personally never seen him swim before but from the looks of it, he's learning mighty fast!

What's for lunch?

Today I finally realized one of my little brother's accomplishments, communication.

After my mom and I picked up my little brother from his daycare, my mom asked him how much he ate for lunch. He replied that he ate most of his lunch and food.

Here's the progression of his talking skills:
1. What is lunch?

2. I forgot what I ate...

3. I think I ate blah-and-blah...
and now, he can actually reply to stuff.

EDIT: I just came upon a series of signs badly translated, and I guess it sort of relates to this post. Here's the link. Also notice that they have a archive of signs on the site.

Check this out:

It's suppose to mean "Control Room" but I guess domination is mandatory requirement...

The Musician

I didn’t post under the Growing Up section for a LONG time… so here I’m back again.

So on our way to tennis one day, my little brother had a tennis racquets and he started to strum it like a guitar and started singing. I thought that was cute and filmed it.

The following proves that repetition does make you better.

Take 1:

As you can see, he just started learning how to play the guitar and is only making notes from the guitar.

Take 2:

Now he’s adding words, but he sadly forgot in the middle…

Take 3:

He sang the whole song, but forgot to strum his guitar...

I'll post a translation of the song later for all you non-Chinese speaking people.

The Terrorist

As of right now, I'm sitting in one of my parents' friends home, quite full from a lot food. Sitting behind me is a M83 airsoft gun which my little brother is trying to get... (Note: the picture is a bit too sharp as my Picnik, default editor in Flickr, skills are not sharp)

Top notch fighter with extensive training by the Runiteking1 Institute of Warfare. Capable of all advance fighting techniques required of modern warfare. Good communication skills in both English and Chinese with the ability to learn more due to young age. Numbers skills might need some polishing so don't trust this fighter with any coordinates. Will fight for the highest bidder.

Starting price?

Priceless...

The Fighter

Oh gosh, its been a few days since I did a real Growing Up so here it is.

Yesterday, my dad went shopping and didn't know that we still have a carton of orange juice in our fridge, and so he bought a "Special Package" Tropicana orange juice which contained three whole carton. Now he's pressuring me to hurry up and finish the juices before they spoil.

So today at dinner time, my little brother (who we will call Bennie from now on) wanted to drink something and my dad managed to convince him to drink orange juice with him (which is quite a feat). My dad got up and poured some and we ate.

After awhile, the cup was empty and Bennie wanted more. Thus he asked my dad to get him some more drink. A rough translation to English of his dialogue with my dad goes as follows:

Bennie: Can you get me more milk?
Dad: Sure, milk?
Bennie: Milk....

*Dad goes and pours milk*

Bennie: I WANTED JUICE!!!
Dad and the rest of us: But you said milk.
Bennie: NO I DIDN'T!!!
All of us: Yes you did.
Bennie: WAAAA!!!!!!
He went on fussing a while after that on that he was right and were wrong.

Such a fighter over such a small thing...

Numb3rs

So on the way back from my little vacation, my mom decided to try to teach my little brother basic number operators. To teach him, she used a book for pre-schoolers bought in China. Of course like all things school-related in China, the books are quite advanced.

In the span of some two and a half hours, my little brother memorized (or understood...) addition and subtraction in the set of: {1,2,3,4,5}.

I'm so proud of him...

p.s. I don't think he totally understood the whole concept of subtraction though, at dinner time, I asked him a slight extension of his knowledge ("If I eat 8 dumplings, and you eat 6, then how many more did I eat?") and he had no idea... but he is only three and a half...

Time

Today's installment of "Growing Up" is not going to be about my little brother, but about me.

I'm out of town right now, and a few events pushed me to write this post on this touchy topic.

Our family were eating out today at Chili's and on the way in, I broke my $100-plus Citizen chronograph (watch) by accidentally bumping it into one of the hardest metal chairs I have ever felt. The chair, or rather, stool, demolished the watch's glass cover and now, the watch is unusable.

I have written about this watch before and I'm pretty sad at the lost of my fancy watch. Still, more is to come.

At that exact same restaurant, I noticed an ad for Golden Carol. The ad stated: "Refills on Everything!" I immediately thought of my now broken watch and time. Nobody can give refills on time. The only way to take advantage of time is to watch yourselve and use a watch... which I broke.

Then, after exiting Chili's, I realized I got a little sun-burned in my day by the pool. I only got sunburned once in my life, and that's cause I was stupid and stayed out in the summer sun by the beach for more than a few hours. This time, I did the exact same thing, and didn't watch the amount of time I stayed out without using sunscreen.

All three events somehow connected to time under my weird brain...

Boasting

My little brother's day care is not open today, thus one of his older friends came over to be babysat by my mom.

So while eating dumplings for lunch today, my mom counted up the number of dumplings each of them should eat. She told my little brother's friend (whom we will name Evan) that he should eat at least six and my little brother at least four.

Suddenly, my little brother started saying stuff of how he could eat ten thousand dumplings when the maximum he could eat is only six.

The seed of pride is planted.

Growing Up

This is probably the first of a long series in which I document the process of growing up.

So I posted in the past about the littlest thing making my day, such as the one about pink icing, but this one ties in with my little brother.

Apparently my little brother's daycare took him out to a swim today.

When I came home from tennis today, I was all sweaty, tired and in a somewhat bad mood. That's when my little brother started talking to me of how he can put his head in the water a hundred times.

Trying to woo him off as I try to take a shower, I replied, "good job."

Not expecting a reply, I took of my clothing, but my little brother said in the cutest little voice:

"Thank you."

I was smiling afterwards...
